Power Yoga
By Mike Brown
There are many yoga nay-sayers out there in the world, however, there are 25 collegiate ice climbers at Tufts University that feel differently. Thanks to Lauren Herstik and Katrina Gleich, power yoga teachers extraordinaire, VICE does weekly yoga sessions in the gym at Tufts in preparation for the winter seasons. Traditional yoga is static and focuses on balance, concentration and breathing while power yoga (or vinyasa yoga as it is sometimes called) is a more dynamic style. It creates a flow between the traditional yoga poses where each breath dictates the length that a particular pose is held. This style of yoga is designed with an equal focus on power, balance, and core strength. Training in this way will translate well into ice climbing fitness because power, balance, core strength, and breath control are essential components to scaling ice walls of any size.
