Whether ice climbing, rock climbing, hiking, camping, biking, canoing, kayaking, or swimming, VICE truly enjoys the wilderness of New England. We acknowledge the hard work that goes into maintaining these recreational areas and do our best to give back to the outdoor community by volunteering our time and effort to do trail work. Thanks to the efforts of individuals in TWO, TMC, VICE, and the AMC, JLo earned recognition as trail adopter of the month for September 2009. His blog entry about this award includes a summary of the relationships between these groups and a commitment to future trail work together.
National Trails Day - 06/06/09
VICE sent a trail crew team to the Highland Center on June 6th for National Trails Day. The volunteers included Jed Palmer, Phil Mallon, Talya Peltzman, Austin Siadak, and Jeff Longcor. They worked hard to replace old bog bridges by carrying heavy lumber, felling trees, hammering spikes, digging ditches, and clearing brush. The day ended with a rewarding BBQ and gear raffle. Everyone had a great time working hard and meeting new people. The AMC staff did a great job leading a number of successful projects and put together a great overall event.
Franconia Ridge
In early 2008, JLo adopted the breathtaking section of Franconia Ridge between Flume Slide Trail and Liberty Springs Trail. VICE visits the trail at least twice a year to assess its overall condition and perform basic maintenance. Over the summer, Tufts Wilderness Orientation (TWO) sends a group of eight incoming freshmen and two leaders to Liberty Springs campground for five days. This energetic trail crew handles the majority of hard labor. Their tasks include clearing drainages, rebuilding cairns, painting blazes, and cutting brush. The AMC provides the necessary tools and materials through a cache at Lafeyette place campground. This mutually beneficial relationship has resulted in a rewarding program for TWO, an impressive number of work hours logged on the trail, and a better outdoor experience for hikers.
Carrigain Region
The year after adopting a trail on Franconia Ridge, JLo became the Carrigain Region Leader. While his primary responsibility is communicating with trail adopters and coordinating trail work trips, he also assesses trail conditions and performs his own maintenance. There is a vast amount of remote territory to cover in the Carrigain Region and JLo is always looking for volunteers to help with assessment and maintenance. He is proud to say that VICE members have helped him out every step of the way. In the fall of 2009, Phil Mallon and Jed Palmer joined him on an epic night hike of the Hancocks followed by a full day of trail work. The 2010 season promises to be incredibly productive for VICE and AMC.
